DHL Global Forwarding, Deutsche Post DHL Group’s air and ocean freight specialist, and DHL Freight, one of the leading providers of road freight services in Europe, yesterday, September 6, celebrated the start of construction of the new DHL Campus Vienna Airport. The two divisions are building a state-of-the-art freight hub for Austria and Eastern Europe on the site in the municipality of Fischamend. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Dr. Günther Ofner, Member of the Board of Flughafen Wien AG, Thomas Ram, Mayor of Fischamend Municipality, Christoph Wahl, Managing Director Austria at DHL Global Forwarding and Horst Sorg, Managing Director Austria at DHL Freight.
“With the DHL Campus Vienna Airport we are further expanding our leading market position in Austria. This modern logistics hub, which meets the highest safety and quality standards, will enable us not only to handle a higher volume of freight for our customers, for instance in the Life Sciences & Healthcare industry, but also to provide an even better service. The direct proximity to the airport will reduce turnaround times and create valuable synergies with our colleagues in road transport,” says Christoph Wahl, Managing Director Austria at DHL Global Forwarding.
DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Freight are each building an advanced freight terminal and an office building with a total of around 12,000m² of warehouse space and around 3,500m² of office space on the property in the municipality of Fischamend. This will pool competencies for air and ocean freight as well as land and intermodal transport centrally at one location and create new, larger capacities for cargo. The adjacent Vienna airport and the connection to the A4 freeway will enable both divisions to provide their customers in Austria with even better and faster transport and logistics services. Previously, DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Freight conducted their business from three locations in Vienna, which will now be merged on the new campus.
“At DHL Freight we have a European network with more than 200 terminals. With the new building in the Vienna airport region, we will further improve the quality of our Europe-wide general cargo network Euroconnect and our premium LCL service Eurapid. Innovations such as digital yard management will also be implemented at the new site,” says Horst Sorg, Managing Director Austria at DHL Freight.
“We are delighted with DHL’s decision to build a new logistics campus here. This underlines the attractiveness of the Vienna Airport Region as a business location for Austrian and international companies. With well-developed properties, excellent transport connections and great local amenities, the region offers optimal conditions. New developments create jobs and strengthen the entire region,” says Dr. Günther Ofner, Member of the Board of Flughafen Wien AG.
Completion of the new DHL Campus Vienna Airport is scheduled for the first quarter of 2019. Around 250 employees will then dispatch and consolidate freight at the new location. The new warehouses and office buildings will not only meet the highest security standards (TAPA A) but will also comply with the most rigorous environmental protection requirements. The sustainable design and use of renewable energies will directly contribute to Deutsche Post DHL Group’s goal of reducing all logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050. In addition to alternative drives and green transport solutions, sustainable measures in the construction and modernization of Deutsche Post DHL Group sites will play an important role in achieving this goal.
“I am delighted that an international company such as DHL has chosen Fischamend as its location. This decision shows the importance of our city and the airport region,” says Thomas Ram, Mayor of Fischamend Municipality.
